installationheader

Requirements

  • Blender 2.78 or Blender 2.79
    • 2.79 is recommended
  • Cycles

Only stable releases are supported, the latest of which is 2.79. Use the addon at your own risk with the bleeding edge builds of blender and don't count on my help, should you see errors.

Latest

The latest version of DECALmachine is 1.4.2a - available on Gumroad and Blendermarket.
See this page the learn what's new in the latest versions, or see the changelog for the full release history.

Previous Versions

  • Backup any Custom Decals you may have done with since 1.3.5 by copying the assets/CustomDecals folder in your DECALmachine location to a safe place
    • If you have created Custom Decals before 1.3.5, I recommend to re-do them
  • Remove the previous DECALmachine folder from your addons folder
  • keep the PIL folder in the modules directory and ignore the PIL step below - PIL has not changed

Instructions

Follow the steps outlined in the video and detailed below.

DECALmachine

  • Extract DECALmachine_v1.4.2a.zip
  • Copy the DECALmachine folder to your Blender addons folder in the user scripts location

Addons Folder (in user scripts)

Linux: /home/name/.config/blender/2.78/scripts/addons
MacOS: /Users/name/Library/Application Support/Blender/2.78/scripts/addons1
Windows: C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.78\scripts\addons

Attention

MacOS: do not put DECALmachine in the blender.app package
Windows: do not put DECALmachine in the C:\Program Files\… folder

PIL

  • Extract the PIL archive for your operating system
  • Move(don't copy) the entire PIL folder into the modules folder, in the user scripts location. You'll most likely need to create it.

Modules Folder (in user scripts)

Linux /home/name/.config/blender/2.78/scripts/modules
MacOS: /Users/name/Library/Application Support/Blender/2.78/scripts/modules1
Windows: C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\2.78\scripts\modules

Attention

Do not leave a PIL folder in the DECAlmachine directory and don't put one in the addons folder either.

Activation

  • Start Blender, find the addon in preferences in the Add-ons tab and activate it, save your user config.

Import Errors on Windows

ImportError Cannot import name _imaging or ImportError: DLL load failed
You need to install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015, if you get those errors.

See the FAQ for other errors, before reporting anything.

MACHIN3tools

I recommend you install MACHIN3tools, which is a free addon collection.
It provides a variety of tools and of particular interest to you in relation to DECALmachine is Mirror and Shading Switch.
If you are going to use DM's custom vertex normal tool (W)Step I'd also recommend Red Mode.

Mirror is the recommended way to mirror Decals across another object. If you are using Rob Fornof's Mirror Mirror and/or my previous Multi Mirror Mirror, Mirror replaces them both.

Hard Ops

If you are using HardOps alongside DECALmachine, do the following:

  • make sure to use at least HardOps version 0093 - Neptunium
  • run the Hardops Fix in the DECALmachine preferences to ensure best compatibility between the two, see here for details

Asset Management

If - instead of using the built-in asset loader - you want to use the Asset Management addon, first install normally, but make sure DECALmachine is installed/activated after Asset Management.

  • make sure the Asset Management file path is set in the Asset Management preferences, save your user config and quit Blender
  • copy the Decals and CustomDecals folders in DECALmachine/assets into the assets folder Asset Management uses to store its libraries
  • start Blender, go the DECALmachine preferences, click the checkbox 'Use Asset Management Assets Path'
  • you should see the path in 'Decal Assets Path' changing, save the config
  • optional:
    • you can optionally turn off "Use built-in Asset Loader" now
      • this will remove the asset loader from the pie menu
      • if you leave it on, it will now access the decal assets in your AM library, from the DECALmachine pie
    • you can now remove the Decals and CustomDecals folders from DECALmachine/assets, if you want
